The Q-SPD is a unique propulsion solution that breaks away from traditional features and common perceptions of surface propulsion, bringing modern thinking and technologies to the design and implementation of a truly new type of high-performance boat propulsion.” – www.q-spd.com

At MAKAI Power Catamarans we strive for excellence in all areas of performance, comfort and design efficiency. Just a few examples include our creative interior design with berthing for up to 6 people, our Air-Glide tunnel hull design, our search for high modulus building materials or, as in this article, the propulsion system.

We have internally calculated and tested various propulsion options and discuss our choice of standard propulsion and the reasons why MAKAI chose inboard diesel propulsion for our power catamarans. We have now moved to the next level with the introduction and integration of Q-SPD (“Q-Speed”) surface propulsion technology.

When adapting and optimizing engine and propulsion technologies to maritime architecture, typically the advantages and disadvantages – pros and cons – must be carefully balanced. But in the rare case of the Q-SPD surface propulsion system, we have arrived at a propulsion system with virtually zero technical disadvantages. The benefits are nothing short of astonishing.

Surface Drive for boat

With all these impressive benefits, why isn’t every boat fitted with a surface drive?

For starters – production efficiency: For manufacturers installing outboard motors or inboard shaft drives as standard, introducing a surface drive can be quite complex and costly if not designed and carefully planned for optimized production at an early stage of design. This is why MAKAI has included the surface drive option from such an early stage of development. Also in the past, articulated surface drives have faced similar maintenance requirements as stern drives due to the many moving parts of the articulated system. However, this has been completely overcome with the Q-SPD surface propulsion, which has been introduced as a zero-maintenance propulsion system by using rudders instead of drive joints. On our beam catamaran and paired with our Vetus bow thruster installation (fully integrated into the engine hull control system), we achieve greater maneuverability than a conventional stern drive or a knuckled surface drive.

More about the unique Q-SPD system

Combined with MAKAI naval architecture, the Q-SPD offers a surface drilling system that eliminates the traditional compromises commonly experienced with other surface drives, yet brings the same high performance characteristics expected of the best performing motor yachts. The Q-SPD solution is virtually maintenance-free – all hydraulic cylinders, lines and systems and other critical mechanical parts are onboard.Water-lubricated shaft bearings and self-lubricating rudder bearings ensure long life and maintenance-free operation.

The internal thrust assembly is water cooled and oil lubricated for maximum life. The design is modular and easy to dismantle and maintain when required, the main service components are inside where they remain dry, clean and free from contamination and corrosion, making it easier to service when required.Grooves instead of tapers make disassembly and reassembly a breeze.

Many customers choose Q-SPD Surface Drives not only for their efficiency and speed gains, but also for their long-term reliability and maintenance-free operation. Even in demanding commercial applications, Q-SPD drives have proven to last thousands of hours without significant service requirements.

The Q-SPD drive and propeller design offers better low speed operation without the need for propeller trim functions or other aids required by other drive types. The Q-SPD’s contoured under-hull design provides better thrust at both forward and reverse low speeds, improving maneuverability and reversing performance. Owners with Q-SPD have reported that maneuverability is better than their previous experience with conventional shafts and stern drives.Low speed operation is predictable and favorable, and again there is no need to add correction propellers.

A notable feature of the Q-SPD Surface Propulsion option is the fast and effortless acceleration. The Q-SPD utilizes exhaust and passive air ventilation to ensure the right amount of propeller ventilation at all times. There is no need for additional ventilation pipes, no need for ventilation grilles on the swim platforms to provide sufficient air to the propellers, and no need for propeller trim to get on board. Just push the lever and get to planning conditions faster and easier.

IS SURFACE DRIVE FOR ME?

From a purely technical perspective, the choice between stern drive or Q-SPD surface drive is an easy one. With a 15% (minimum) improvement in fuel efficiency and boat speed, and virtually eliminating drive maintenance, the MAKAI x Q-SPD surface drive option is definitely a winner.

However, the additional upfront cost must be taken into consideration. Therefore, the length of time you intend to own the boat can be a factor – we have calculated that the system can pay for itself within 3 years. Once the end result is achieved, the reduction of stress and frustration caused by maintenance downtime can be the critical factor. If you are like us, the increased time spent making memories on the boat (and reduced repair time) is a metric that cannot be measured.
